Animal Deterrents Allowed on Airplanes?

QUESTION:
My wife and I are going on a hiking trip out west this fall. Are there any animal deterrents (pepper spray) that are legal to take in checked luggage?
Thanks.

-Bryan

ANSWER:

Bear Spray

Great question, Bryan! Following September 11th, restrictions and security increased dramatically, and the rules keep changing!

The TSA allows: “One 4 ounce (118ml) container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. Self Defense Sprays containing more than 2% by mass of Tear Gas (CS or CN) are prohibited in Checked Baggage.”

I would double check with the airline before you go, and it may just be easier to find a local outdoors store in the area where you will be traveling to and pick up bear spray or the other animal deterrant you are considering using.

Safe travels and happy trails!
